It All Started with Mezcal

Like all good things, ATAXITO started with a copita (little cup) of mezcal. A dinner guest, upon first sip, blurted: "Drinking mezcal is like taking a taxi to happiness!" Their unabashed joy was irresistible.

Whether setting off on a grand travel adventure, or simply armchair-dreaming of trips to come, there are some things (like drinking ancestral mezcal, or- experiencing global cultures and traditions) that affect us, whetting our appetite and capturing our imagination. In their essence, they offer direct journeys to deep happiness.

At ATAXITO we embrace travel that is grounded in authenticity and respect for local communities and their traditions. We create and share experiences that reveal the secrets, shortcuts, and even surer routes to happiness with thoughtful travelers who prioritize meaning and connection.

Our Travel Philosophy

ATAXITO is not just a way to travel — it’s a mindset. It’s an outlook that the quality of an experience is more important than the quantity of the experiences you collect. When you travel with us, you can expect:

Local, First & Foremost

Your tour has been thoughtfully developed by locals, centered on authentic experiences with indigenous artists and craftspeople; women- and family-owned and operated businesses; and multi-generational artisanal and ancestral traditions. We eschew gentrification and cultural commodification, and prioritize “slow travel” which respects the original, unique, and authentic.

Slow Travel

ATAXITO trips are about stopping and taking the time to properly connect with a place, its people, and the land. We emphasize connection: To local people and their communities, cultures, foodways, and traditions. Our itineraries are designed to educate and have an emotional impact, while remaining sustainable for the community and the environment.  Instead of focusing on rushing through a list of “hot spots” (as defined by guidebooks written by foreigners), we balance our days with the things locals like to do and the places they derive pleasure from.

Prioritizing Connection

Our tours are based in guest houses owned and operated by local families, versus large conglomerates or foreign hotel chains. Our lodging choices reflect more than just a place to lie down at night — they're invitations to enter into family homes and small businesses, where the owners welcome us personally, inviting us to experience their passion and love for their city. We include traditional meals with families, craftspeople, and cultural hosts, so you can make even more connections, and develop an understanding of what makes Mexican

hospitality so unique.

Experience-Based Activities

Instead of racing to do it all (or focusing on “just showing up for the Gram”), we prioritize experience-based activities that let us slip into the pace of local life and culture, while learning something new. From hands-on cooking classes, to intimate conversations with artisans in their studios—each experience offers a learning opportunity and opportunity to do and try. Our meals celebrate the social aspect food plays in bringing people together, along with the unforgettable flavors that make Oaxaca one of the best places in the world to eat.

Curated Small Groups

We carefully curate each ATAXITO tour group, starting with an introductory call with interested participants to ensure the program is a match with your interests and needs, and the group is well balanced. Unlike large commercial tour operators, each group is capped in size and tailored to the participants, ensuring you have a richer, personal experience and more meaningful engagement.
Our programs are designed for those 18 years old or older—and our groups are made up of a mix of solo travelers, friend groups, families, and couples.

High-Touch Client Care

Your tour experience comes with one-on-one access to your ATAXITO ambassadors before, during, and immediately after your travels. From what to pack and what to expect, to personalized advice on practical matters (like: where to shop for a special specific gift, or how to package fragile purchases so you get them back home)—we’ve got you covered, so that you'll have an unforgettable and positive trip experience from beginning to end.
